Sing Out Leslie! A conversation with the Midwest diva by Joseph Erbentraut
EDGE ContributorThursday Jul 23, 2009
Leslie Hall is not your average former prom queen. Both in Ames, Iowa, the songstress and gem sweater museum curator has developed a cult following for her 400+ bedazzled sweater collection, her penchant for wearing gold pants and her band, Leslie and the LY’s, whose songs have become Internet and dance party sensations.
Four years have passed since Leslie and the LY’s first album, Gold Pants was released, and now Hall finds herself considering a few different directions: A country album, television and... gay wedding planner/officiant? In preparation for her upcoming appearance hosting About Face Theatre’s "The Homo Show" at Subterranean Monday evening, we caught up with the self-labeled "cewebrity."
A new sound
EDGE: What all has been keeping you busy as of late?
Leslie Hall: I’m finishing up my first country album and doing a lot about sewing and gardening. That’s kind of old lady stuff and it’s like an old lady album, now that I think about it.
It’s definitely going to be not Leslie and the LY’s sounding, there’s a whole new twang and I don’t even think I’ll be performing in a suit. I’ll be wearing a matronly prairie dress. This is my evolutionary album, evolving as a performer.
I just pitched some TV shows in LA and I haven’t heard back yet whether I get to be a TV star. I’ll find out very soon. Meanwhile, touring, touring, touring, staying sharp with my dance moves, and just gearing up to destroy Chicago once again. I can’t believe anyone is still standing from last time [at Berlin last New Year’s Eve].
