Co-Ed Prison Sluts by Angie Berthelsen
EDGE ContributorTuesday Jul 15, 2008If you’re looking for a night of cross-dressing, sex-crazed fun, then The Annoyance Theatre has it. The Annoyance celebrates 20 years with the return of its flagship show, Co-ed Prison Sluts.
The show is making a comeback after debuting in 1988 and running for 11 years. Co-ed Prison Sluts is written and directed by The Annoyance founder Mick Napier. The cast is all new with the exception of long-time actress Ellen Stoneking who reprises her role as Dame Tolouse. Each actor brings his own unique style to the show. The music is outrageously funny and some of the costumes will have you rolling in your seat.
The audience was laughing, hooting and hollering through almost the entire show. Co-ed Prison Sluts is centered on a group of neurotic prison inmates who have nothing better to do than to talk dirty and mess with each other. There’s the prison psychiatrist, Dr. Bello (Scott Goldstein), who likes to dress in drag and to hypnotize the inmates so no one will notice. By far one of the highlights of the show was watching him struggle to put on a dress as he stood on stage in his bra and underwear, meanwhile the inmates are under hypnosis.
Other memorable characters include the dame who believes that although she is in prison she is a talented actress and should be treated as such. Then there’s Skeeter played by James Asmus, the young boy who accidentally was sent to prison instead of juvenile hall. And then of course the infamous clown, played by Clay Goodpasture, who makes random appearances under ominous lighting to add a little suspense into the mix.
I must warn you, you will be singing the songs as you leave the theater. Songs like "S*k It, Mother F*cker" and "The Dog Is Eating My Hamster Now," have a tendency to stick in your head. The music is definitely original. On the night I saw "Sluts," it was obvious there were some die-hard fans in the audience. During the show some of them joined in and sang along with the cast. The audience was laughing, hooting and hollering through almost the entire show.
Co-ed Prison Sluts runs at the through Friday August 29th at he Annoyance Theatre & Bar, 4830 N. Broadway.Tickets are 15 dollars and can be purchased at www.theannoyance.com or by calling the box office at 773-561-HONK.
