Where to Eat Outside Brooklyn’s Brand-New Barclays Center
BROOKLYN, NY - There has already been a lot of talk about the Brooklyn-branded food served inside the new Barclays Center, but how about the numerous great restaurants just outside of Brooklyn’s massive new arena.
One of the most exciting and comfortable places to dine near the Barclays Center is Piquant (259 Flatbush Avenue, Brooklyn, NY, 718-484-4114, www.piquantnyc.com), a Latin American-inspired French restaurant only three blocks away.
It’s a spacious gem that features a full, wood-paneled bar, an elevated dining area, a downstairs dining room and a sprawling 30-seat backyard complete with a waterfall.
Piquant is an ideal restaurant for a dinner date before a Jay-Z concert or drinks with a group of friends after a Nets victory. Their new chef, Patrick Allouache, creates modern French dishes that incorporate the ingredients and flavors profiles of Latin America.
Stand out dishes include ethereal Duck Confit Enchiladas, Foie Gras Quesadillas, Roasted Halibut with langoustine "con carne" and Catalan Roasted Chilean Sea Bass with zucchini blossom, huitlacoche, and tapenade.
Five blocks from the arena is Ganso (25 Bond Street, Brooklyn, NY, 718-403-0900, www.gansonyc.com), a new izakaya-style restaurant that specializes in modern versions of Japanese comfort and bar foods.
Standouts include Braised Short Rib Ramen, Crispy Pork and Garlic Gyoza Pot-Stickers, heavenly Kari Kari Buns and a Japanese-style Fried Chicken that puts Paula Deen to shame. The name "Ganso" is is Japanese for "original" and "pioneering," both of which perfectly describes the cuisine and experience at this special place.
Other standouts a few blocks from the Barclays Center include Franny’s (295 Flatbush Avenue Brooklyn, NY, (718) 230-0221, frannysbrooklyn.com), a wood-fired pizza and wine bar, Habana Outpost (757 Fulton Street, Brooklyn, NY, 718-858-9545, www.habanaoutpost.com), a rollicking Caribbean restaurant with a great outdoor space and The Vanderbilt (570 Vanderbilt Avenue, Brooklyn NY, 718-623-0570, www.thevanderbiltnyc.com), co-owned by pioneering Brooklyn restaurateur Saul Bolton.
